Faunsdale, AL | When the turbo exhaust side “wheel” snapped off the 6030 one day. I heard a pop and stopped immediately but couldn’t find anything wrong. Then I tried to start back up pulling the 15 shank chisel plow. That wasn’t happening! Tractor would barely move itself to the edge of the field.
Dealership had a 7700 MFWD available. It would pull that same plow just slower. That it would pull it without spinning out was amazing to me. Not sure I had ever really seen a MFWD tractor up close before that one. Got the turbo replaced and the 7700 went back to the dealer.
We jumped to a used Steiger 4WD first and only got the first MFWD 10 years later with a used 4955. Not early adopters here!
We thought MFWD would be just the ticket for our dairy utility tractors that were always having front wheel bearings going out. Had two on leases before we found out that they didn’t last any longer in our conditions but were MUCH more expensive to fix. They were both soon gutted and we were just trying to keep seals and bearings in them so the wheels didn’t fall off. Turns out having oil bath hubs wasn’t the panacea we had thought it would be. Those leases turned into purchases to avoid having to fix all the carnage in those front axles and hubs.
