North Central Indiana | I love these types of hot takes. Of course the software is theirs. Why would you or anyone else expect differently? Did apple or Samsung sell you their software to have as your own in your phone? Your computer brand? Tv? Truck or car? It isn’t your software. Never will be. You can’t have the software data to duplicate or do what you want with. You bought the service that a particular software is capable of providing through whatever mechanism it does so (tractor, phone, tv, car, facebook, tik tok, etc). The reality is if you use anything web based or web capable you don’t own all the data that it creates. Privacy laws protect some of it, but most data we create is free game through the software that it happens with. This is such a nothingburger in regards to John Deere being some big bad boogeyman. So they know your yields (as accurately as you have your monitor set), moisture(same as yield), fuel efficiency, farm locations, preferred route to fields. Your fuel provider also knows your fuel efficiency on a per acre basis if they’re smart. You report yields to crop insurance, the elevators have final moisture numbers, the utility company knows your gas usage for drying and hours that the dryer ran and could do a little math to get close on your average harvest moisture. Your banker, coop, agronomist, dealer, neighbors know your land base pretty well. Guess I just don’t get too excited about it. If any of this stuff surprises you that’s a you problem not a me problem. If you don’t like it you’re free to live off grid, have no phone, drive a 40 year old car, farm with old equipment, use the crops you grow for personal endeavors, use cash instead of a card, store your money in a tin can, have no internet at your house, and avoid public spaces. Not sure why you’d fear the government when they allow you to do all of those things. We’re so free we can’t even comprehend it, and no one would choose to be 100% disconnected because there’s just no point. But the freedom to do so is there for the taking if you really want to.
