Muscle expression defines these cattle. I tend to call them a 'race' within the Simmental breed. 'Type' is probably more appropriate.
One attribute Dad did not like about Flecks was very pronounced skin underneath their chin. I doubt you would ever find a frame 8 or 9 fleck. The other common characteristic in Fleck was a low head/neck set to the shoulders. It was something to get used to.
At the height of the late 80-early 90's popular rejection of large framed flatter sided Simmentals, Dad and I bought a very small framed son of DS Pollfleck. He had Angus way back in his pedigree and turned out to be homozygous polled. We showed Mom the new herd bull and her reaction was "Can he reach any of our cows?". My response was heifers this spring and cows next year.
