In north america you would typically consider a fullblood simmental a fleckvieh. Its the traditional red or tan and white spotted colour cattle. Modern north american purebred simmentals are generally now red or black animals, perhaps with some white.

Over seas is different, in that flecks are generally dual purpose usually, and their simmentals are still the traditional tan and white spotted beef cattle. The names are sort of interchangeable, or one in the same - but just using the animals differently depending where you are.

Here Flecks are the more classic big boned, solid, tall cattle. Sims are more like an older style angus, but thicker boned. The simmental breed has been improved the most and is now the fastest growing breed in NA.
