Subject: RE: Steamy composed pig deads

SW MN - mt. lake/windom
We compost dead stock in horse manure compost. We use wood chips for bedding. I like to see a C to N ratio of 20:1 range. We will compost for 3-4 years before applying to field. We turn ours over probably 6-10times before breakdown process is complete and little heat is generated in pile. If the pile is steaming there is likely a high decomposition rate yet. IMO you want to fuel that process to obtain as much decomposition before applying to field, turning the pile will oxygenate the process and increase the rate of decomposition if it was me, I’d turn it over, pull a sample and test C-N ratio and maybe turn it again. High carbon will pull N from soil potentially reducing crop production or increasing crop operation expense from required higher N rates required. Use time to your advantage
