Big Sky Country | I like running cattle “out”
Got degraded range—-misused for many many yrs—-in 12” precip area. One of the non-desirable plants is fringed sagewort—-some years alate season spray of 24d will decimate it, others it shrugs it off.
I’ve experimented with tordon/liquid nitrogen whatever mixture. Worked—for a while.
Late season hoof action seems to really get it. Another thing I’ve done is broadcast native western wheatgrass ahead of bale unrolling when it’s sloppy out—-sod forming and better than what’s there—-
Depending on my extra hay supply, the price of local hay, and the cattle market—-instead of being fully stocked with cows, Im thinking buy a gob of culls —-here, lots of people ship calves—-sold in the country, truckload lots—-work cows while they got them gathered, sell opens and culls , do their banking and start getting set up for winter.
If you’re selling bred heifers and advertise too early—-you’ll think your phone is broke.
Wait till thanksgiving and it’ll bounce off the hook.
Anyway—I believe in 5 wire perimeter fences and good braces—-thinking have a hundred acre or so ‘pen’, load up late oct and till Im full.
Treat for parasites and turn them out. Utilize the nutrient transfer and hoof action on different areas every yr— —-should add weight, grade , and market moving up. And some ‘opens’ will shine up and be bred. And some ‘culls’ will die.
Anyway, kinda off topic and babbling away—-been mulling this over for a while. I operate outa my back pocket, I see automatically renewing c.d.s I was getting 4.16 apr on are now 3.75—maybe keeping up with inflation and will be taxed on the ‘income’ and that irks Me. With current loose cannon and posse of incompetent colaborators/cowards running this country, I think u.s. $ will continue to weaken against other currency’s.
