Lidocaine is really easy to administer, and it can reduce the pain to the animal. Restraint is important, need to hold the head still to be sure to get adequate "burn". I have tried the butane burners, never had much luck, the Rinehart X-50 has been my go-to, we have had one since about 1986, it quit working about 20 years ago, and I replaced it with the exact model. I also used the Rinehart at the University farm I worked at, there the students were taught to dis-bud in different classes. We followed a vet-recommended protocol for pain relief and dehorning procedure. It isn't a difficult process, just needs to be done timely, as the horns can grow fast! It is way more easy than waiting and using Barnes type scoops or OB Wire, or Keystones when they are much bigger.
