Driftless SW Wisconsin | Agreed, as I said above, I would not sell any cows with the idea of buying replacements.
This whole conversation really depends on a lot of factors not known, such as facilities, available feed, finances, etc.
If you have the facilities, equipment, time/labor to feed out steers then do that. I suggested selling them to provide cash to buy good young black bulls as you mentioned in your OP. "Hurt feelings of the seller " are a separate possible issue.
Sounds like the current owner sold calves rather than feeding them out. I stand by my post above. Perhaps you can leave bulls in longer than 50 days/2 cycles. Your choice of priorities. Same with going to spring AND fall herds.
As for me , I'm just a small time operator. What do I know...
