Earlville, NY | We have a dairy, they are getting strict on de-horning practices. They want us to consider using lidocaine when burning even at 2-4 weeks old. Personally, I think the younger you burn them the less they feel it; they are usually jumping around at feeding time and eat fine a few hours afterwards. We used to use a Portasol, worked great, but we constantly had trouble with keeping them lit after a year or so. Went through a coupe of burners and a couple of rebuild kits. We now use paste at birth, I don't like it as much; you have to keep them separated for a few days which is fine with calve pens; may not be a problem for beef calves with mother to keep them from sucking each other. My biggest concern is that paste seems to miss about 5 maybe even 10% of horns, then you to go through a much more painful and time consuming effort to remove them.
