SE SD | Rotational grazing can work anywhere, its just going to look different depending on climate and production. There is plenty of places out west that rotational graze. It might not be high stock density, moving every day or week. Might be graze 2000 ac pasture for a month and maybe not graze it again till next year. Rotational grazing is about providing rest and regrowth before re grazing. Out west, might not re graze till the next year. It can be done, but its going to look a little different than Illinois. Out west i know some operations that don't use cross fences, but use water to move cattle to different areas of pastures. Turn off one tank and turn on another and cattle will move on there own. You can make it as simple or as complex as you like. I know the GPS collars are becoming a thing and may help. Keep it simple, as questions, there is EQIP program that can help if you need to add additional fence or water development. | |
