The ones you sit on top of are easier to get on/off of, the ones you sit down in have a lower center of gravity and are less likely to tip over, so kind of a trade off. The most likely time youll flip one over is when you have a spot with faster current like a rocky let down on a river and you get spun sideways in it instead of staying straight with the flow. I would say younger people tipping one over is usually no big deal but older folks that have trouble getting back up on their feet fast in the flowing water it can be a scarey ordeal.

We have 4 sit in ones that were in the 300 to $400 range, they've held up well to hitting rocks they have dents in them but no leaks, but the seats aren't at all comfortable. Now you can buy better seat cushions for them online. Also the sit ontop ones seem more buoyant which is nice when the rivers get low, you won't get hung up and drag as often. My next one will be a $500 sit on top model but im not worried about tipping one over as ive been through it before
