We have 20 acres of fescue/orchardgrass/mixed pasture that was overgrazed last fall. I should have no-tilled rye into it to graze off early this spring (just to have more total grass to graze early) but that didn't get done.

I overseeded red & white clovers on it yesterday, and I realize the overgrazed condition should let the clovers get a better start. I'm not worried that the grass won't come back; it'll be fine eventually, just not good early growth.

I'm thinking about no-tilling in some oats and ______. Maybe some rapeseed, or another brassica....looking for ideas.

If you just frost seeded clover, then I wouldn’t waste any more “tillage” passes with a notill drill on it to potentially bury some of your clover seed. Keep it simple.

Rest time and Nitrogen

Give the clover a chance to get germed and going and then hit the nitro afterburner. That fescue will jump 12 inches in 10 days…

If you get tempted to bring out the notill drill and drill 1.5 bu of oats and 2# of some other broadleaf per acre, smashing my finger with a ball peen hammer usually jolts me back into orbit…..
