| We rotate everything (cattle). Over 3 sections of pasture divided into 40 acre paddocks. Water source in the middle of every quarter, with four 40 acre paddocks off of it. Most perimeter fences are two hot wires, and all interior fences are single hot wire. I can't say if stocking rate improved as it's mostly improved pasture on former farm ground or expired CRP so there's no grazing history to compare, but there's usually a visual difference at the fence between ours and neighbors where ours is taller and/or stays greener deeper into a dry spell. Usually make 2-3 rotations per year; once in the cool season, once in the warm season, and once in the dormant season. It does make forage quantity planning easier when you can say each paddock has been lasting X days, and you say we have Y paddocks left to graze through, so you know your forage will last until Z without any new growth.
Interior fencing for sheep is obviously a whole different ordeal. I'm about to pull the trigger on some virtual fence to try on the sheep. I don't like what it will cost, but I want to try the technology as I think it will open up some larger opportunities for me. | |
