Subject: Bulking up overgrazed pastures

Northeast Missouri

We have 20 acres of fescue/orchardgrass/mixed pasture that was overgrazed last fall. I should have no-tilled rye into it to graze off early this spring (just to have more total grass to graze early) but that didn't get done.

I overseeded red & white clovers on it yesterday, and I realize the overgrazed condition should let the clovers get a better start. I'm not worried that the grass won't come back; it'll be fine eventually, just not good early growth.

I'm thinking about no-tilling in some oats and ______. Maybe some rapeseed, or another brassica....looking for ideas.
