Don’t think you’ll ever get fuel out of that head retaining bolt. Like they said already, it’s not a bleeder and the pump should bleed air/fuel out the return line fitting on the top cover just by pumping the lift pump over on the opposite side of the engine.
If you start messing with the pressure adjustment screw under the pump inlet fitting, you’re changing the calibration of the pump.
It’s time for an overhaul. Best you can do for your friend is to get it on TDC compression stroke for #1 cylinder so it’s ready to remove. That way there won’t be any drama when it’s time to put it back on. I think that pump slips off, leaving the shaft in place. Have a book at the shop, so I’ll have a look in a minute.
