So far I have been using it as an advanced search engine. For example the other day I ran a CaseIH part number for an oring that didn't have a size listed in the North American parts book. I was able to get a size back as a reply along with a link to another caseih parts website in a different part of the world that had the size published. It didn't work for all the orings in the pump I was rebuilding but was still useful to cross check. It can sort through a user manual really quick if you happen to know a few key words associated with what you want to do. Let's say you want to set the time on your microwave and that setting was buried in some obscure menu. If you know the model number and ask how to set the time you will likely get a reply with the relevant part of the user manual(if the manual can be found online).

Lycos, Infoseek, Yahoo, even Google all started out that way. Type in a search and you got real info out of them back in the day.

Any more now, you get a list of ads the first 10 results. It’s all about selling you something. If I search for a small town something or other here in Minnesota, the first 5 results will be ‘Top 10 hotels in Hanska MN.’ Well, Hanska has a population under 50, it has 2 actual blocks you can circle but half of the time you will be on gravel road. And I wasn’t looking for a hotel, I was looking for what was the old machinery dealer used to be there decades ago… I won’t find anything helpful to my actual question until I scroll down 2 pages or so, and then it stops listing anything of value. They only want to push ads at me any more.

While you are finding some good info for now on the AI sites, soon they will follow the same path and just push junk as you. But they will be conversing with you, not listing info that you can verify yourself. I find that alarming in this society. I can sort through the junk pretty easy on the search engine line item results. I can’t really sort through a conversation the computer is making up.
