Yes, I don't think this was uncommon for the older battleships during shore bombardment. The tubes in the main batteries elevated only something like 15 degrees on the Texas vs I believe 45 degrees for the later battleships. The ability to achieve "plunging fire" with their 16 inch main batteries is part of the reason the SoDak and Iowa classes were highly regarded.
We tend to sort of snicker at battleships, today, like "why didn't everyone realize they were obsolete" But, what awesome weapons systems they were! The speed and accuracy in which they could deliver many tons of ordinance is quite impressive. | |
