| There were 2 morticians in my local Lions Club. The small town guy making a living and the city guy who had done well and sold his business to retire to the country. Both were nice guys but I made the mistake of sitting with them at a dinner meeting and they shared too many work stories for my liking while I was eating. My father was in Ruritan years ago and before the meeting they would meet at a members house to have drinks. One of the other members asked my father to help him a few minutes before leaving for the meeting. What he needed help doing was putting a body in a casket for his neighbor the little old lady who was the local mortician. Dad only did that once.
My mother in law passed suddenly this past spring and the next day I went with my wife and her brother and his wife to make arrangements. The funeral home was a long established but large multi location place who had buried my wife's father, uncle, and grandparents who were all local farmers. We dealt with the owner's 20 something daughter who was very knowledgeable and professional. The sticking point was payment, cash or a bank check was required before services could be performed. Personal checks were not accepted. My wife and her brother both brought their personal checks from banks 2 hours away. At that point they had no access to their mother's accounts. Payment caused additional anguish until the young funeral director called later in the day to tell us that her father had agreed to accept their personal checks. | |
