Eastern NE KS
I think the organizations that register Angus into their hybrids will call the Angus a 'complementary cross'....even if the only desired complement was black color (in the early years). Breeders quickly learned how to profitably use Angus and composite breeds were born.

Half blood bulls production history is checkered, especially in the early years. Today the growth pattern of the 2 breed is not so divergent yielding sires that breed more true to their type than long ago.

Another significant change is the average cowherd 30-40 years ago. People were trying seemingly any Continental breed under the sun. Creating cowherds the representing a high degree of mongrelization. If a halfblood bull was used on these cows, the problem became worse.

One of the real achievements in the last 20 years is the quality and usefulness of the calves running through the sale barns. Yes, some of this 'uniformity' is simple things like color and polled. But I think it goes deeper into the actual productivity of the calves we all produce.
