Boone Co. Iowa | Row crop farming is changing.
The guys that have a few hog barns, have been investing in tiling, that sprayed fungicides, they really probably did good around my area.
The guys that overpay rents, have expensive machinery costs (either high repair bills or new paint syndrome), and farm untiled ground and saved money by not spraying fungicides last year, probably went backwards in a significant way.
Just about like anything in the country, the haves really gained a lot on the have-nots last year.
According to the conversations I have had, a lot of guys have not made money the past three years and last year was just the kicker.
But the guys that have made farm investments like tile, livestock (manure), and spray fungicides, man, they needed those new big-azz combines to haul all their corn away.
