West Central Indiana | I think a Macdon FD75 or FD140 would be age appropriate to a 2017 640FD.
Yes dual knife drive is standard on a 640FD.
I believe a 2017 640FD is close to the end of the line before they went to 740FD's. I was told not much difference between a 640/740.
You will need a little toggle switch at a minimum on a 780 to run a macdon's head fore/aft. I can't remember which function on the combine handle it is but your reel up/down button is how you tilt your macdon head. So you flip a little switch to roll your head angle in or out then flip the toggle to go back to the button running your reel up and down.
Contour master does not have to be hooked up on a macdon...but it is a nice option on really rolling ground.
My first draper was a 2010 Fd70 40' on a 9770. Then ran it on a S680. Now have a FD140 on a S780.
Last season I added a 2nd S780 and I put an RD40F on the front of it.
I want 2 matching heads at some point in time. I really think the RD40F shaves the ground better in my terrain the bulk of the time.
I like the reel to cutter bar relationship on the Macdon better.
I also like how the macdon floats independent of the throat of the combine in rough terrain.
I like how the sections bolt on the Deere better than the Macdon. Macdon has resolved that issue on the newer machines.
I'm divided on which one I like better
