As for the price of bulls I can’t or won’t say what a bull is worth but if you have your cows and land payed for $20,000 bulls won’t hurt you but if you are paying interest on cows, land and equipment then you should rethink your logic. I hadn’t planned on ai on cows this season but with a proven maternal bull in the tank already and available at cost of collection I think I will be using him pretty hard and the daughters of his already in the herd I will buy semen for them.

That is what we kind of decided on the way home. If we breed a string of replacement heifers, we are going to buy more than we need, then AI them all a bit early, and then also AI them a second time on the next cycle. Any that don't settle after that, we will feed out or resell. I don't want to have to buy three low birth weight bulls for $60K to breed 100 heifers. We may even collect from some of our existing stock. |
