The push to continually add more DG stores may help the overall corporate business to increase sales, but it could come at a cost of making each individual store less and less profitable.

Yes, but it's also a competition. Home depot moved into WI and Menards built stores to compete, not because there wasn't another Menards nearby. Buccees talks about moving to Deforest and suddenly that's the cheapest fuel in the state. Or auto parts, three chains were competing with each other, not for better product or service, but a store to edge out the competition. Didn't work for all the stores obviously.
