Western Oregon | First time, she came to my farm with her mother looking for her brother who worked with me. 2nd time was that winter. I helped her brother build his milk parlor. First thought was that she was his bratty little sister. His wife invited me to the July 4th picnic, I had entered my '66 GTO in the show and parade. His sister was there and seemed to be interested in the car and hung around, I asked if she wanted to ride in the parade, she said yes, so I asked her brother if it was alright. We talked a lot that day. She mentioned how much she missed the beach, so I told her I would take her but it had to wait until wheat harvest was over, middle of August. Great day at the beach, had dinner, stayed to watch the sunset and the hour drive home. I asked her Mom and brother for her hand and we were engaged, in mid Sept, set wedding for Nov 25th on Friday, on her 4 days off. We honeymooned at a nice hotel/restaurant, 2 nights right on the beach and 1 day at a friends fishing cabin on the river. She had to be back at work on Monday. She turned 15 on Dec 10th. First Christmas 15 days later. First Valentines was 1974, I turned 18 in March.
Sweetie was a skinny little blonde beach bum from Long Beach California. She grew up, all the way to 4'12". Her Dad had passed away the summer we first met. Cancer ate up all their savings. Sweetie had to grow up quick, worked until midnight every day after school and all summer as a waitress. She and her Mom took care of Dad at home, for the last 3 years of his life. He died at home with hospice. Brain cancer, at 50. I was not blessed to meet him. Mom had a hard time getting a job after he died, she had never worked, she got a job at the school as an Aide, minimum wage. She had a hard time adjusting to both work and her loss. Sweetie stopped working in July after we got married to help her Mom. Lost Mom 10 years ago, she was my Mom, after my Mom passed away. Sweet lady....James
