Eastern Kansas | Breeding some open heifers would be the cheapest way to get in. And if the deal dries up, you could sell the bred heifers and make some money on them. But, that leaves you no calf crop income the first year. I think if I was you I would buy 15 middle aged cows and 15 open heifers. Find you a calving ease bull to run this summer. Out of those 30 head you should have about 25 pairs to run summer 2027. Take off from there.
You'll have to explain to your landlord that running open heifers isn't like running cows. Should be able to run 1.5 heifers to 1 cow. So 30 won't be too hard on the grass.
