New London, Wisconsin | Fall of 1982 I was checking my corn moisture to see when harvest might start, I was 26 and just bought my farm in a new community to me that spring. A cute blond walked by with a very enthusiast German Shepard on a leash, with her clearly struggling to keep up. I walked to the truck in time to say hello, and asked if the dog was taking her for a walk. She laughed, and said yes but didn't stop... she couldn't. A week or so later I stopped to talk to a landlord of mine about my lease and I see what turns out to be her room mate trying unsuccessfully to start a new push mower. Time to be the hero I thought. I couldn't get that thing started to save my life, but it was good. By that time the cute blond came out and recognized me. Her name was Cathie. We were renting from the same guy. Her the house, and me the crop land. She invited me to a nice dinner she was cooking. Our first date if you want to call it that was me picking her up to go for a combine ride. ( year old IH 1420 ) It must have been good because she stayed a long time. Married in 1984 and still going strong 42 years later. 4 kids, 7 grandkids. She's a keeper.
