NEMO | Jim has good intentions, but he's never calved out large groups of cows or hfs using true CED bulls. There are anomolies, but all too often using high CED bulls will result in what we call throwaway calves, that's a hard lesson to learn. Just in visiting with many Angus breeders, at least some are adjusting their thinking. A 7 or higher number on CED qualifies Angus as Show Me Select here in MO. Some Angus guys are thinking they need to be at at a 5 or less to not take too much growth away. Back to the OP, there is absolutely no reason to use a "heifer bull" on cows. Pick a bull with a middle of the road CED and good growth numbers and roll on. Like a bunch of posts on here said, see what the local market is and figure out a bull plan. | |
