MountainValleyFarmer - 2/12/2026 13:44 Purchased 90 black commercial cows in January. They are mostly angus and angus/simmental I’d guess. Thinking I’ll AI the lot of them for April 1st calving this coming summer. Thinking I’ll use LimFlex semen as I don’t plan to keep any daughters out of this next go around. Your thoughts on this? My goal is to get the best market value I can while keeping calving issues to a minimum. TIA! I'll be the odd man out here - Having purchased 90 commercial cows and assuming that you really know nothing about them, I would go with a definitely calving-ease semen and clean-up bull. Live calves and cows that are not paralyzed are much more important to your profitability than what breed the calves are. Losing a couple calves and/or cows during calving will pretty much overwhelm any slight price difference on "Hot terminal crosses". A very good mineral program and high CED registered Hereford semen and bull or bulls will get you live BWF calves that will sell well. And maybe you will change your mind and want to keep a few replacement heifers out of the group of calves. There are some very good Hereford bulls with high CED and high growth EPDs.
