How many of you are still expanding your cow herd with these bred cow/heifer prices. Currently have the opportunity to rent pasture for 25 more cows ($275/pair). Pasture is productive with good fences and water. Just nervous as a young producer with bred heifers bringing $4500 and dependable cows at $3,500. Does a guy wait this year out or jump on in?
$275 per pair for how long?
If it’s per a grazing season of a specified time (may - October 1), I’d do it. I’ll bet NE sand hill rent is 1.5 plus times as high as that. Although, I’d be lying if I didn’t say that the “tipping” point depends upon how much down payment $$$ you can contribute towards the cow purchase.
How pessimistic do you think a 550 # calf will be worth come fall? $2000? $1500? $1200? And, what of your projected feed costs/care? |
