Northern Indiana | An ISO (Insurance Service Organization) rating is a score of a fire departments capabilities as far as a structure fire. Not rescue or EMS.
The ratings are from 1 to 10. Water supply, equipment, training, manpower, despatch protocols, equipment service records, and several more items go into the rating. 10 is no Fire department available and 1 a well staffed and trained department with good equipment and water supply.
The maintenance and preformance of equipment is a bigger factor than the age. But a minor part of the total score vs manpower, training and water supply.
Some insurance companies no longer use ISO ratings but have an algorithm that looks at losses paid in a particular geographical area or zip code.
