We could make a lot of difference if everyone would just cut 10%. Plant 10% fewer acres. Spend 10% less this year on inputs and have corn and beans up a dollar by fall. It seems so simple.
I feel like the market is trying to do that by removing acres from ag production and turning them into residential/commercial or hunting property. However, most farmers are hellbent on keeping great great grandpappy’s ground that he homesteaded before the war.
Selling cropland for $300-500+ per sqft will buy a very nice piece of farm ground elsewhere. Far enough from the citiots you won’t have to drag your sprayer booms in the dirt to keep the neighbors from complaining you killed their trees, tomatoes, houseplants etc.
One thing to keep in mind, every acre the US takes out of production will be replaced with one in another country. SA has a lot more forest to burn if the price is right. So 10% reduction could ease the pain here for one year. If the price per bushel rises though, it will just give our competitors incentive to bring more ground into production. |
