Time has come to pull the bull. With warmer weather coming up I need to pull the bull with this group and have the vet in a couple weeks give the heifer calves a lute shot. I usually pull the bull and one or more steers for a companion, or bull and a son, or bull and an older bred cow. This year I just have one bull and no steers left. Putting a good older bred cow in has worked but occasionally ends up moving her calving date up as she calves and is rebred a month ahead of my regular bull in date. It was suggested I buy a donkey as a companion for the bull and later as a guard for the herd. My wife likes the idea of having a donkey with the cattle as a neighbor does. Question is, will one donkey and one bull work as a companion for each other. They're both herd animals and I would have only one of either in a pasture by himself. I have no experience with donkeys. Anyone here with experience? Or just put an older cow in with the bull? |
