Got red calf out of a black cow/black bull once. That took me a minute to understand, neither were pure of any breed.
Then both those black animals were carrying a red gene. That mating repeated 4 times should result in 25% red calves, 75% black calves, with 1 of those 3 black calves being homozygous black.
