Eastern NE KS | Quick answer is either bull will produce black calves most likely all the time. But a tested Simmi that is found homo black is a more sure bet unless the Angus tested red carrier free.
My guess is 99.9% of registered Angus (black) are homo black just like the tested simmi. A very small percentage carry the red gene. It is considered a defect to the American Angus Association. An Angus bull tested for carrying the red gene and found negative has the same color genes as a homo black simmi.
To complicate the issue: In the Red Angus association a registered Red Angus that is black, is most likely heterozygous and carries both black and red genes . His calves can be either color out of red cows.
