Subject: RE: Fire equipment manufacturers

Iowa - Floyd County
I’m not going to claim to be an expert on ISO ratings but I’ll share what I’ve been told. Age of apparatus doesn’t matter that much, what is important is maintenance and annual testing. If it can pass annual pump test and you have equipment maintenance logs you’ll get full credit for the capability of that apparatus no matter the age.

Obviously I don’t know the details of your town/township’s apparatus but if you had something with a smaller pump capacity ratings could be improved by a truck with a larger pump capacity although you only need 750gpm and 300 gallons of water onboard to meet requirements. Also, distance from the fire station/hydranted areas plays a huge role, most rural areas can’t get above a “5” and many are lower than that.

Sorry for the long post, I got to rambling a bit. Basically age of apparatus doesn’t matter as much as a lot of other factors and I doubt a new fire truck really did much of anything to decrease rural homeowners insurance rates, likely the town just needed more money to pay for it.
