The powers that be were keenly afraid of deflation. Deflation is a hell of a lot harder to get control of than Inflation. And the U.S. did better than most in that regard.

Yes.  I believe this was a part of the reason why.  Supposedly those who studied the depression.. lesson learned  (Keynesian ) is “if the economy ever comes close to seizing up..  (unlike Hoover ) flood it with liquidity.. Since Keynesians were in charge.. that’s what they pushed for..  (to be fair Trump et all started the checks first.. also note.. I realize that ag program payments are also Keynesian.. ”gulp” )

Irregardless.. we launched inflation.. which most would see as better than a rapid contraction.

However, for the poor.. doubling living expenses.. food, rent.. etc.. did they??  Escape the collapse? Price of Milk.

We all know at least asset owners say their side of the ledger expand to compensate.. it’s been argued on this site that Ag payments only pump up inputs.. so.. does Keynesian policies work?

arrghh gonna get flamed for this.. oh well.

Weve been discussing the Koch bros libertarian Cato institutes paper on immigration.. “immigrants more than pay their way on taxes.” Over on TPP  (and boy hasn't that been fun.. )

https://www.cato.org/white-paper/immigrants-recent-effects-government-budgets-1994-2023

What this article alludes to but doesn’t include is the disinflationary impacts of immigration  (one reason why everyone gets so touchy about it..) especially undocumented (illegal) immigration.

To which Barry Flinchbaugh warned us about..

https://www.farmprogress.com/farm-operations/barry-flinchbaugh-minces-no-words-when-talking-ag-policy

Almost 75% of our fruits and vegetables are picked by illegal immigrant workers,” Flinchbaugh told attendees. “About 50% of the milking of dairy cows is done by illegals. We don’t have any idea how many of our feedlot or meat processing workers are illegal.”

When it comes to immigration policy, these realities need to be taken into consideration, Flinchbaugh said.

“You get all this talk about H2A workers, but we don’t need seasonal workers. Cows have to be milked 365 days a year. We need permanent workers.”

The reality of the last several years has been that net migration is going south, wages are going up and labor shortages are becoming common, Flinchbaugh said.

Finally, he said, farmers and their allies must make the administration understand that U.S. farmers absolutely must export 25% of their production.

“At the end of the day,” he said, “the question is, if you don’t have exports, you need to cut ag by 25%. Which 25% do you want to put out of business?”

Agriculture needs a legal, permanent, immigrant workforce

Not a lot of American workers want to pick tomatoes, thin lettuce, harvest fruit, milk cows or process beef and chicken.
Thousands of those jobs are filled by immigrant workers, many of them without legal status for living or working in the U.S.

Now Trump follows that up with kicking out cheap labor.. construction.. health care.. picking vegetables.. trucking.. milking cows.  And inflation is locked in.

Do we blame the migrants.. leaving the cartels and wages worth $2/day to come work here for $15/ hour.. vs $35 to $50 for citizens.
