East of Broken Bow | Had a neighbor lady that would rent pasture by pairs, and ran 30 pair in her greass for ages. People renting pasture by the pair put the biggest ones in rented pasture, to get the most calf per rent dollar paid. The guy renting from her kept breeding his cows bigger and bigger until the pasture could only sustain 26 or 27 cows.
She then changed the rent to so much per pound. They would weigh the pairs coming in, and charge based on the weight, so the situation changed from the best deal for the renter going from the biggest calf per cow, to the most weaning weight per pound of cow. Within 2-3 years, that pasture went to having 33-34 smallish cows, and having more grass left over than when they had 26-27 'big' ones.
By smallish, I mean around 110-1150#, and by 'big' I mean 1700#+
Convinced me that the biggest cow isn't the most efficient. | |
