N MO | Kinda why I wanted to make this post. Getting a scale on the chute is best thing I ever did. Lots and lots of time, I pick the wrong animal for being lighter or heavier. Usually not even close!
Baldy and black cow are that 1600-1700 mark. 10 years old and Plenty big! They generally wean my biggest calves. Sons usually go into the bull pen. Not all my bigger end cows accomplish this.
The next 3 cows are 1400-1500. Breed back, raise a calf in top 1/3. Daughters I love and sons sell quickly. 009 is actually a daughter of the big black cow out of a more moderate herd sire I ran for a couple years.
The last cow was hard to get a reference. She is a 1250-1300lb cow. She is one of my donors as she is a high marbling maternal focused cow. I have leaned towards fire and ice matings with her to get enough performance to keep her progeny in the top 1/2-1/3 of my calf crop.
That small cow also won’t eat any less or gain any quicker than the others. When she was a show heifer her ration was no different than her +200lb bigger daughter of the 2nd picture cow.
Overall if I can keep length and depth to these cattle, I think I can keep the cow guy, feeder, and packer all happy. | |
