NEMO | Actions like this from Trump are more damaging to increasing the American beef herd than anything else.
I was contemplating keeping a bunch of heifers until last falls comments from Trump. After the $400 - 500 per head pullback in one week I decided to throw my hands in the air and say enough is enough. (I know we recovered that and then some, but it's the thought that counts)
Every industry outside of ag makes good money, but NO the cowman is making TOO much money. Trump should come along and ride with me for one day choring in sub zero weather, cut frozen net wrap off of hay bales and make sure all the waterers are working. Then tell me if we are making TOO damn much money!
For context, this year I will probably only keep 20 to 30 heifers, last year I kept around 55. The year before that around 70, and before that we were breeding almost every heifer along with buying a few heifers to breed, so 4 or 5 times more than now.
The time to keep heifers is when the market sucks and the time to sell is when they are high. When a politician can influence the market with a tweet, that is no market that I want to be in.
What happened to America first?
I might double down on not keeping hardly any heifers and sell half the cow herd now too!!!!
