NE Iowa | I have some small marginal fields around my permanent pasture. I keep them in an alfalfa, orchard grass, and fescue mix. I rotate one to corn every year and then seed back down for about 6 years. I chop the first cutting from these fields in late May but then rotationally graze them the rest of the summer and fall. I chop the first cutting because the permanent pasture is growing so well then I don't need extra pasture. I have tried grazing first "cutting" before and they trampled about half of it. The later cuttings it seems like there is very little waste. I think I maximize the grazing by using alfalfa. It grows the best in the heat of the summer and keeps going if it gets a little dry. As long as cows are well fed and some grass in the mix I have zero bloat issues. | |
