Calf tags which match dam's id# are in their ear from approximately first born. I use less expensive blank ztag feedlot tags for calf tags (~$0.50/tag). Feedlot tags are adult size but thinner so the are about the same weight as calf tags.
These are replaced at about 1 year of age with their permanent 'adult' id#.
