| Just read the book "A Dog For the Job" which is about cattle dogs (Blue Heelers) in Australia going back to the early 1800's. It was stated that when herding wild cattle only the very fastest dogs and horses could keep up and pass the cattle. The dogs needed a full set of very sharp teeth that would draw blood on every bite. If not the cattle would kill the dog. The dogs were trained to keep the cattle in a cluster while cowboys castrated and branded. Some ranches were over 35,000 acres without a fence. Milder heelers were used on dairy cattle etc.
Very, Very good book that really debunks numerous myths about the Blue Heeler (no Dalmatian or Dingo ancestors) and the pivotal role it played in the settlement of Australia. | |
