mercer county, il | I wonder if an easier way to establish it, and kinda ease into it would be planting an OG/fescue hay mix with some alfalfa in it. Mow it a few times and turn the cows out.
At least here, anytime I tried to seed any grass in a hayfield, after a couple years I ended up with a lot of grass.
I’ll try to keep better track of expenses and the time put into it this year. I know I can grow more feed than 3 ton/ac, but the time and expense would be interesting to compare head to head.
Just for comparison, on marginal sand, the oat pea mix usually yields around 3 ton/dm, and we can follow it with corn for silage or soybeans. Generally a 5-10 bu yield drag on the beans though.
