On a Tuesday morn two days before Thanksgiving 1985 I was starting to load a truck with corn with a auger ran by a PTO shaft, The ground had a slight freeze to it that morn, I steeped between the tractor and PTO for something [left side] and my left leg slipped and the PTO shaft grabbed my leg "just" above my ankle bone, it ripped my cover-all leg, my high boot off, my high top work shoes off and ground a deep hole in my ankle. I was hung-up on the shaft and I screaming at the truck driver to shut the PTO off and he froze !!!!!! the tractor was a Ford 3000, there PTO lever is on the left side under the seat, I managed to reach it and push it off. I'm in bad need of help--- truck driver is still froze. Right then Pa. St. Trooper pulls in and takes me to Hospital ER. [I knew the Trooper] ER cleans me up puts me on Anti-B. and sends me home. Thanksgiving Day I am very sick, cant eat-- 34 family here for the day, My one Neese just become a Dr. took one look at my leg and said "get" him to the ER now. I had Blood Poisoning and came within 12Hr. of loosing my leg above my nee. was in Hp. for 10 days. Funny thing my ankle was never EX rayed--- never. I went home and went right back to work , no prob. with ankle, all good, still milking cows then. Fast foreword to 2024 --- My ankle starts to heart like I sprained it, after a bit it stop's hearting, then in the fall of 25 it get's bad, I go to Orthopedic I tell them about what happened in 85 they ask " was it EX -Rayed " I say "No" --------- We need to EX-Ray it. Dr. comes in and says look it this---- EX-Ray shows ankle was crushed and "just" healed in that matter---- what a mess. No wander you are in a lot of pain now and there is nothing we can do now except to "Shoot it up" every six weeks or so such as it is. For 40yrs. it never bothered me--- hard to believe--------- I'm not going to let it hold me back, 82 and still going. " Now that's my story and I'm sticking to it." Jim Sr | |
