South Central Illinois | The railroads were given huge grants and land grants also.
To get them built.
A alternating section of land on each side of the tracks.
These could be compiled for 6 miles away from the Tracks.
Pretty sure they did this to find white oak trees for railroad ties.
The government was selling the land for a dollar an acre at the time.
They would give an acre to the railroad and sell another acre to the public for two dollars an acre.
So technically, the government did not lose money on this.
The railroads got built.
The railroad owners became robber barons.
And then once the railroad was built, they had a monopoly for that area.
Because the land grants were not available for an additional track.
So at some point, they did need regulated.
Now the railroads are a bulk Commodity long distance thing.
Containers cross country.
Imported cars cross country.
Domestically Manufactured cars and trucks long distance from a manufacturing facility.
No need for all of the commuter lines to get things to and from all of the villages. | |
