You may not be getting all of your dry fertilizer this year, but if you quit putting enough nutrients out to support the crop you will eventually run out. Once that happens, it is very difficult and expensive for crop yields to recover. I am not sure how fast that happens in the prairie soils, but it happens relatively quickly in our part of the country.
