Yes trucking most definitely is. Trucking provides so much more flexibility than rail on short hauls. With the advent of the interstate highway system, the container system maturing and trucks that could reliably haul 30k+ lbs loads, not every little town or county needed a spur or stop on a rail line. Trains are a poor way to move freight when talking about local single car movement.

It had nothing to do with unions.
