Subject: RE: Railroads in Iowa?

I've always wondered how they compacted the fill in the rail beds particularly the approaches to the tall wooden tressels over the rivers. There is one near me that has over 40ft of fill, id think even if they packed it with mules it would have kept settling for years and caused the rails to become unaligned. The railroad was built in about 1885 here, seems like all of it would have been a massive undertaking at the time.
