Subject: RE: Railroads in Iowa?

south central IOWA
One thing that no one has mentioned is that Iowa was once a top producing coal state. Especially in central and southern Iowa. The coal fueled a lot of the expansion of railroads. Google says 1917 was the peak.

Look at an old mining map of Iowa and it will surprise you of what's under the cities and towns. Waukee in particular is built on one of the bigger underground mines. Another fun fact about coal mines are that they are a great source of Radon. Radon causes cancer. Iowa leads the nation in cancer or is at least up there. Farmers get a bad wrap about being the reason for all the cancer but it could be as simple as the house you live in.
