southern MN | Diesel electric engines probably had the most to do with it. Along with the development of the road network for autos and trucks.
The old school boilers were slow and needed to stop regularly.
The diesel electric could ramp up faster speeds and didn’t need to stop for long stretches.
The old school was -the- transportation mode available, everyone used them for everything.
The newer trains; now there were options for travelers, road network for personal and small freight. The new trains could use their speed and long distance between stops for efficient hauling of heavy cargo, but they gave up frequent and slow stops. It was a big trade off, it took time for the road network and the better train engines to cross over to what we have now.
Efficiently moving many tons of cargo means a long haul with no stopping once you get it moving. This is what trains specialize in now.
Cars and trucks and busses have taken over the short haul, small loads.
